Bring character into your home with a Berber rug. Originally made in Morocco, these wool rugs add a great sense of warmth to any space. The Berber rugs at Volero are inspired by traditional designs, but made with modern materials and techniques. That makes them lighter and easier to style in a wide range of interiors.
Berber rugs: from tradition to today
As the name suggests, Berber rugs originate from North Africa. They were made by the Berber people, who lived in the region long before the arrival of the Arabs. Today, these countries are known as Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Libya. Textiles from this region are known for their vibrant colours and are often still handmade. The traditional rug-knotting techniques were passed down from mother to daughter, and the colours, patterns and symbols used varied by tribe. The Berber rugs in our collection are inspired by these authentic designs but are produced using modern methods.
A Berber rug is beautifully warm
In the past, original Berber rugs were handmade, sometimes over the course of several years. Women would craft these rugs using leftover sheep’s wool, dyed using natural pigments. The rugs were designed to protect against the cold and damp. A Berber rug was knotted in such a way that both sides could be used: the soft, high-pile side for warmth and the flat-woven side for sitting or sleeping on. Today’s production methods are much faster, which also makes Berber rugs more affordable. Like shaggy rugs, a Berber rug adds a sense of warmth to your home.

Berber rugs, also known as Moroccan rugs
Traditional Berber and Moroccan rugs are often made from wool a natural choice in the past due to its durability and insulating qualities.
Today, you’ll find Berber rugs in a wide variety of styles. Thanks to modern production techniques, new materials are being used too. This makes today’s Berber rugs more resistant to wear and more accessible for families with children. If there’s a little spill, no worries; they’re easy to clean.
There are both high-pile and low-pile Berber rugs available, and despite their rich heritage, they fit perfectly into a modern home. Give your space the attention and style it deserves. At Volero, our Moroccan and Berber rugs come in various colours and sizes. Want to keep the Eastern inspiration going? Check out our Persian and kilim rugs as well.
